The Monta Loma neighborhood revolves around Monta Loma Park

Mountain View, California, boasts a rich architectural tapestry that intertwines mid-century design with contemporary charm. Within this vibrant city are tracts of Eichler homes, a testament to modern architectural finesse. These homes, especially in the Monta Loma neighborhood, stand as symbols of an era where design and function met at a beautiful intersection.

Our Monta Loma guide has the streets, recent sales and homes for sale.

A Glimpse into the Monta Loma Eichler Homes
Mountain View houses a total of 275 Eichler homes. These are primarily divided between two prominent tracts – Bell Meadows and Fairview/Monta Loma. The larger of the two, with 200 Eichler homes, is the Fairview tract situated within the Monta Loma neighborhood. You’ll find these Eichlers on streets like Quincy Drive, Benjamin Drive, Thaddeus Drive, and several others.

Built-in the mid-1950s, a majority of these homes are designed with a 3-bedroom, 2-bath layout. These Monta Loma Eichlers reflect the characteristic Mid-Century Modern aesthetics, reminiscent of other homes in the vicinity, including those built by Mackay Homes and Mardell Homes.

Diving Deeper: The Fairview Tract and its Legacy
The Fairview tract is particularly intriguing. Constructed in 1954, it consists of around 185 homes. The Eichler homes here predominantly occupy a space between 1100-1400 sq ft, with a majority following a 3-bedroom blueprint. What makes these homes special is their architectural lineage. After parting ways with Anshen and Allen, this tract bore the hallmark of Jones and Emmons’ design.

However, the history is richer than it appears. Shortly after his separation with Anshen and Allen, Joseph Eichler spotted the pair collaborating with John Mackay, considered an Eichler rival. In an interesting turn of events, Eichler reconciled differences and worked with both pairs, Anshen + Allen and Jones + Emmons, concurrently until 1960.

Wrapping Up: Monta Loma’s Eichler Tapestry

Mountain View’s Monta Loma neighborhood remains a hub for Eichler enthusiasts and those with a penchant for mid-century designs. The Fairview tract’s ode to Eichler’s reconciliations and collaborations, Monta Loma stands as a testament to architectural innovation and elegance.
With easy accessibility to tech hubs like the Google Campus, Monta Loma is not only an architectural marvel but also a strategically positioned one. It’s a neighborhood that tells tales of design, history, and community.
