The full ranking for any city is live on our Neighborhood Ranking page.

City by city
For each city with at least four ranked neighborhoods (5 or more sales each): the highest and lowest median price per square foot, and how far apart they are. Tap a city for its full live ranking and map.
Fewer than four ranked neighborhoods in the window: Atherton, East Palo Alto, Monte Sereno and Portola Valley. Their guides and sales are on the live page.
Reading it right
- A ranking summarizes recent sales; it isn’t a verdict on a neighborhood. Price per square foot moves with home size, age, lot, condition and views, and with the mix of homes that happened to sell. A higher number says nothing about which neighborhood is right for you.
- Bigger homes often sell for less per foot. A neighborhood of large homes can rank below one of small homes with a higher median price. See the numbers by house size.
- Outlines are ours and approximate. Each is the one drawn for our neighborhood guide; a few are simple boxes (marked “approx.”), and where two overlap a sale inside both counts for both.
- Sample sizes are shown on every row. Small neighborhoods can move several places from one month to the next.
- Price per square foot is sale price divided by living area as listed, from the MLS through our IDX feeds; repeat records are removed.
- San Jose and San Francisco: this post reads the full 180 days. The live page reads fewer sales at once in the largest cities, so its figures there can differ.
