the story
How El Monte Road & Foothill College came to be
This corner holds the original Taaffe Ranch house site. The Town's history page says the couple who received 2,800 acres of Rancho La Purísima Concepción as a wedding gift in 1863 built their home on what is now the Foothill College campus. The college's own history says its site took in land from the Taaffe partition of the rancho. Before the college, the big house here was Lantarnam Hall, an estate built in the 1910s and later called Morgan Manor. The Town's 2016 history anthology says the private Ford Country Day School moved into it and stayed until 1988, when the property, now known as Stonebrook Court, was sold to a private owner. The Town lists Morgan Manor as an official Town Historical Landmark.
Foothill College gave the area its center. The college's history says the board picked a 122-acre site in Los Altos Hills on September 15, 1958, and hired architects Ernest J. Kump and Masten & Hurd. Ground was broken on July 1, 1960, and the campus opened for classes on September 5, 1961. The American Institute of Architects gave it an Honor Award in 1962 and an Award of Merit in 1963. The Town's history page adds that artifacts such as mortars and pestles, found east of Moody Road in 1955, led to archaeological study by Foothill College.
Much of the housing came in pieces. The Town's street list shows Oneonta Drive accepted in county meeting minutes in 1953, before the Town existed, and La Loma Drive and Court accepted by the Town Council in 1959. South of Stonebrook Drive, a 1987 state environmental notice for the Lands of Quarry Hills described 43 lots on a 358-acre site at the Stonebrook, Magdalena and Olive Tree cross streets, with about 255 acres of open space, an annexation and prezoning. The anthology records Quarry Hills' approval in 1996 as the last large subdivision in the Hills, with about 280 acres going to Midpen. In 2012 the Town annexed 50 more county parcels on La Loma, Olive Tree and Mora drives.

The streets and the houses
El Monte Road is the hinge. It passes under I-280 at the college, which sits between Elena Road and El Monte Road. South of the college, Stonebrook Drive runs about a mile from El Monte Road to Magdalena Road, with Oneonta Drive, Stonebrook Court, Priscilla Lane, Oak Park Court, Oak Knoll Circle, Emerald Hill Road, Kate Drive, Teresa Way and Laura Court off it. Prospect Avenue climbs west to La Loma Drive and Court, Summit Wood Road, Edgecliff Place and Finn Lane. Willowpond Lane and Tepa Way reach the same hillside from Moody Road. Dawson Drive and Rebecca Lane come in from Magdalena Avenue, and Duval Way and Josefa Lane sit off Elena Road beside the college.
Across I-280, between El Monte Road, Summerhill Avenue and Magdalena Avenue, are Voorhees Drive, Clausen Court, Barley Hill Road, Hilltop Drive, Colina Drive, Miraloma Way, Bella Ladera Court, Amigos Court, Casa Mia Way, Dawnridge Drive, Princess Ellena Court, Hillview Road and Bush Avenue. Tiare Way and Nicole Lane sit just northeast of Summerhill Avenue. County parcel records give most of that pocket (Summerhill, Hilltop, Barley Hill, Dawnridge, Colina, Hillview and Miraloma) and the Dawson Drive and Rebecca Lane streets a 94024 ZIP. Voorhees Drive, Clausen Court, the college side, La Loma Drive and most of Stonebrook Drive are 94022. The Town's street list shows only the first 1,000 feet of Summerhill Avenue from El Monte Road as a Town street, so ask who maintains the rest. Amigos Court, Bella Ladera, Casa Mia Way, Edgecliff Place, Elise Court, Josefa Lane, Maria Lane and Nicole Lane are listed as private, along with parts of Miraloma Way and Voorhees Drive.
Lots average a little smaller than in the western hills. County parcel polygons put the median addressed parcel at about 1.1 acres, with about one in ten under an acre and one in ten at 2 acres or more. The Town's slope-based limits still set house size. Fire hazard splits by terrain: our check of the state's 2025 map puts the college side and the Summerhill pocket mainly in non-wildland zones. La Loma Drive, Summit Wood Road, Kate Drive, Laura Court, Teresa Way and the south end of Stonebrook Drive map largely as Very High.

Buying or selling in El Monte Road & Foothill College: what we check
Buying here
- Check the ZIP and the jurisdiction line on the parcel. The Summerhill pocket and Dawson Drive mostly use 94024, the rest mostly 94022, and the Town line with unincorporated Loyola runs just northeast of Summerhill Avenue.
- Fire zones change within a few hundred yards. The college side and the Summerhill pocket map mainly as non-wildland, while La Loma, Summit Wood, Kate Drive and Laura Court map largely as Very High.
- About half the parcels sit inside the county's mapped fault-rupture zone. Read the hazard disclosure, and ask whether past permits needed geologic review.
- Several lanes are private, and Summerhill Avenue is a Town street only for its first 1,000 feet. Ask for road maintenance agreements.
- Living next to a college means event and class traffic on El Monte Road. Drive the route at commute and class-change times before you buy.
Selling here
- Have the Town's MFA/MDA numbers ready. Lots here cluster near one acre, so the slope adjustment can matter.
- If the home is on a private lane, provide the maintenance agreement and any recent paving or drainage work.
- Disclose fire and fault zones clearly. The difference between the college side and the La Loma or Kate Drive side is real.
- For La Loma and other recently annexed parcels, gather any county-era permits along with Town permits.
