How Braly Park came to be
The Braly name is older than the park. In 1855, farmer John Eusebius Braly built a one-room schoolhouse and named it Braly School. Today's Braly Elementary is named for him and for his son, John Hyde Braly Jr., the first Santa Clara County superintendent of schools. The school opened at its present site on Gail Avenue in 1964. The Jefferson Union School District built it; that district is now part of Santa Clara Unified. It closed in 1984 when enrollment fell and reopened in 1992. The city park next door shares the name, but we couldn't find a record of when it opened.
South of the park is Gavello Glen, about 160 houses built from roughly 1952 to 1959. Developer Elmer Gavello hired Anshen & Allen, the architects behind Joseph Eichler's early houses, and named many of the streets for Gavello family members; Pierino, Henrietta, Gail and Gary avenues are among them. In the 1990s, the city approved a plan to replace four of the houses with denser housing.
The flower-named blocks right around the park came later. A listing on Gladiola Drive shows a 1966 ranch house, and a fourplex on Calla Drive dates to 1964, so the area mixes single-family streets with small apartment buildings. A small registered neighborhood association, Braly Corners, covers a few blocks between Gail Avenue and Wolfe Road.

The streets and the houses
Flower names cluster around the park: Daffodil Court (the park's address), Gladiola Drive, Goldenrod Court, Hydrangea Court, Calla Drive and Bellflower Avenue. Gail Avenue runs north-south past the school, Iris Avenue runs along the south side of the park, and Garland Avenue and the four Garland Terrace streets sit toward Fair Oaks Avenue.
Gavello Glen lies south of the park, between Fair Oaks Avenue and Wolfe Road. Its streets include Iris, Pierino, Henrietta, Gavello, Gail and Gary avenues, and Jackpine, Duff and Anshen courts. The houses share some Eichler traits: concrete slabs with radiant heat, open-beam ceilings and glass facing the back yard. Unlike Eichlers, they use wood mullions instead of aluminum, and some have a steep central gable with a glass front.
Elsewhere, expect 1960s ranch houses and some small multi-unit buildings. The Gladiola Drive sample is a ranch-style house of about 1,700 square feet on roughly 6,700 square feet of land. A 1964 fourplex on Calla Drive has four two-bedroom, one-bath units of about 830 square feet, with carport parking, on a lot the listing shows as zoned R3 (multi-family). Single-family and multi-family zoning can sit a block apart here.

Basketball courts, a jogging path and a reservable sports field are on the adjacent school grounds when school is out.

This area sits on a district line. On the state's district map, the park, Braly Elementary and the blocks south and east of them (including Gavello Glen and Calla Drive) are in the Santa Clara Unified School District (K-12). Blocks to the west toward Fair Oaks Avenue and north toward Old San Francisco Road are in the Sunnyvale School District (K-8) and the Fremont Union High School District. Braly Elementary (675 Gail Ave., Santa Clara Unified) is beside the park. Attendance boundaries change, so confirm the exact address with each district.

Getting around
- Sunnyvale Caltrain station (121 W. Evelyn Ave.) is about 1.1 miles north, and Lawrence Caltrain station is about 1.3 miles east (straight-line).
- VTA Rapid 522 runs on El Camino Real between Palo Alto and Eastridge, with stops at Wolfe Road and Fair Oaks Avenue.
- I-280 is about 2 miles south by way of Wolfe Road, and US 101 is about 2 miles north by way of Fair Oaks Avenue (approximate).
- Old San Francisco Road runs west toward downtown, and the Murphy Avenue restaurants are about a mile from the park.

Buying or selling in Braly Park: what we check
Buying here
- Check the school district for the exact address in both the Santa Clara Unified and Sunnyvale School District lookups. The line runs right past the park, and the listing's school fields may be wrong.
- For an original Gavello house, plan on a radiant-heat specialist and a pressure test, since the heat runs through the concrete slab. Also ask what has been done to the windows and the glass walls.
- Look at the city zoning map for the lot and its neighbors. Calla Drive has at least one 1964 fourplex on R3 (multi-family) zoning a short walk from single-family streets, which affects what can be built next door and how much traffic and parking you'll see.
- Next to the park, visit on a weekend afternoon. The reservable picnic sites hold groups of 50 to 70, which affects parking and noise.
- Houses built before 1978 come with the federal lead-based paint disclosure and a 10-day window to test. Compare any remodels with the city's permit history.
