the story
How Ortega Park came to be
Ortega Park is both an 18.16-acre city park at 636 Harrow Way and the name people use for the streets around it. The Ortega Park Neighborhood Association, registered with the City and dating to 2005, covers the blocks from Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road to Wolfe Road north of Homestead Road, plus a strip on the west side that runs up to Fremont Avenue.
The houses date mostly from the late 1950s and early 1960s; MLS records we checked on Carrick Court and Heron Avenue show 1959 and 1961. The street names follow two themes. One is birds: Albatross, Bluejay, Canary, Condor, Eagle, Heron, Hummingbird, Goldfinch and Grackle. The other is the British Isles: Hebrides, Islay, Jura, Kilkenny, Killarney, Limerick, Londonderry, Liverpool and Loch Lomond. Half field guide, half atlas.
One Eichler pocket sits on the north edge. Chukar Court and Chickadee Court, on the north side of Dunholme Way across from Stocklmeir Elementary, are the Fairwood Addition. Plot plans in the Oakland & Imada Collection at UC Berkeley's Environmental Design Archives, credited to Claude Oakland, carry dates of 1961 and 1970. The main Fairwood tract is about half a mile east, around Panama Park.
streets and homes
The streets and the houses
A few longer streets (Inverness Way, Dunholme Way, Albatross Drive, Blackhawk Drive and Heron Avenue) run through the neighborhood, and many short courts branch off them. Original homes are single-story ranch houses; the two listings we checked were about 1,530 square feet each, on lots of about 6,000 and 6,300 square feet.
The City's zoning map shows these blocks as R-0, low-density residential. One single-story combining district sits in the association's northern strip, around Bobwhite Avenue, Arran Court, Belfast Court and Bobolink Circle, where second stories are not allowed. For an Eichler on Chukar or Chickadee Court, ask Planning whether the City's Eichler Design Guidelines, adopted in July 2009, apply to your address.
Two features worth knowing on a map: the Sunnyvale East Channel, a flood-control channel, runs north-south through the east side between Falcon Avenue and Flamingo Way, and a few Sunnyvale courts (Kinglet Court, Parnell Place and Prestwick Court) sit south of Homestead Road, a short walk from I-280.

School districts and getting around
School districts
Ortega Park is in the Cupertino Union School District for kindergarten through eighth grade and the Fremont Union High School District for high school, based on U.S. Census school-district maps and the district fields on an MLS listing we checked. Cupertino Union's Stocklmeir Elementary (592 Dunholme Way) sits right next to the park; the cricket pitch and fields the City mentions are on its grounds. Across Wolfe Road the district changes to Santa Clara Unified, which matters if you are shopping both sides. Attendance boundaries change, so check the exact address with each district.

Getting around
- VTA Route 55 runs on Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road with stops at Homestead, La Conner, Harwick, Connemara and Fremont; Rapid 523 stops at Homestead and at Fremont.
- I-280: Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road becomes De Anza Boulevard at Homestead Road and reaches the freeway in well under a mile (about 0.65 mile from the park, straight line). Wolfe Road on the east edge also connects south to I-280.

- Biking: the City's Active Transportation Plan map lists Dunholme Way, Finch Way to Londonderry Drive, and a Flicker Way to Heron Avenue route as bike boulevards (Class 3B), shows bike lanes on Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road, and proposes a trail along the Sunnyvale East Channel.

nerd notes
Buying or selling in Ortega Park: what we check
Buying here
- Check which side of Wolfe Road you are on. Ortega Park is Cupertino Union and Fremont Union; Birdland across the street is Santa Clara Unified.
- Before you plan a second story, confirm the address is not in the single-story combining district around Bobwhite Avenue and Arran, Belfast and Bobolink courts, and read the City's Single-Family Home Design Techniques.
- Near the Sunnyvale East Channel, look up the address on FEMA's flood map (the City's flood layer shows no mapped zone in these blocks) and follow Valley Water's channel upgrade, which is in design with construction waiting on permits.
- For a 1959 to 1961 house, ask about electrical capacity, original plumbing, the sewer lateral and permits for additions; pre-1978 homes come with a federal lead-paint disclosure.
- Buying an Eichler on Chukar or Chickadee Court? Get a radiant-heat pressure test and ask whether the slab tubing is copper or steel.
- On Kinglet Court, Parnell Place or Prestwick Court, visit at commute time to hear I-280 for yourself.
Selling here
- State the districts precisely (Cupertino Union and Fremont Union) and suggest buyers confirm by address; it is the first thing shoppers compare across Wolfe Road.
- Give real distances: Ortega Park, Stocklmeir Elementary, Homestead Road shopping and the I-280 on-ramp are all within about a mile.
- Pull permits for past additions and fix visible deferred maintenance before photos; 1950s ranch houses get inspected hard.
- For a Fairwood Addition Eichler, document the radiant system and roof, and market to Eichler buyers specifically.
