the story
How Remington & Pome came to be
The blocks between Mary and Hollenbeck avenues filled in over less than a decade, one tract at a time. City parcel records give each house its county tract number and year built, and they line up neatly: a 1957 tract of 82 houses on Revere Drive, Shenandoah Drive, Plum Avenue, Pecan Court and the south side of Remington Drive; a 1958 Eichler tract of 76 houses around Pome and Quince avenues; Eichler blocks from 1960 and 1961 on Pimento Avenue, Somerset Drive and the south ends of Plum, Revere and Shenandoah; a 1963 tract of 71 houses on Saranac Drive and the Prunelle, Reinclaud and Reynella courts; and a 1965 group on Trenton Drive, Queen Anne Drive and Pomelo Court.
The 1958 Eichler tract has a name on city records. A December 2017 Planning Commission report calls it the Fairbrae Unit 1 tract, an Eichler neighborhood on Pome Avenue, Pomegranate Court, Pulora Court, Quince Avenue, Sheraton Drive and Hollenbeck Avenue, 79 lots in all, built as Eichlers. Owners applied that year to rezone it from R-1 to R-1/S, the city's single-story combining district, which caps height at 17 feet and floor area at 45% of the lot. Today's parcel layer shows the S district on 75 of the tract's 76 houses inside this guide.
The 1960-61 Eichler blocks along Pimento Avenue and Somerset Drive carry the same county tract number as our Rancho Verde guide south of Ticonderoga Drive, so they are the north end of that tract. Later infill came in small batches: Steuben Drive in 1976, Springfield Terrace and Edale Drive in 1988, Pyracantha Terrace in 1998, and Pennyroyal Terrace among the untracted parcels.
streets and homes
The streets and the houses
Remington Drive runs along the north edge and Pome Avenue runs north-south through the middle down to Fremont Avenue. West of Pome, Revere Drive and Shenandoah Drive curve between Remington and Ticonderoga, with Plum Avenue and Pecan Court between them. East of Pome, Saranac Drive parallels Remington with three short courts, and Quince Avenue, Sheraton Drive and the Pomegranate and Pulora courts hold the 1958 Eichlers. Many of the names are fruit or orchard names: Pome, Plum, Quince, Pomegranate, Pomelo, Pimento, Prunelle, Reinclaud.
City parcel records count 372 single-family houses with a median of about 1,900 sq ft of living space, four bedrooms (county counts) and a lot of about 7,850 sq ft. About 81% are one story. Zoning is R-1 for nearly all of them, with 114 houses inside the S single-story combining district: 75 in Fairbrae Unit 1, 36 in the Rancho Verde tract blocks and 3 others. Only 3 of the 69 two-story houses are inside the S district. The 1957 tract is still almost all one story (81 of its 82 houses); the 1963 tract has 16 two-story houses, and the 1965-1998 groups and terraces account for most of the rest.
Expect three looks. The Eichler blocks are one-story Eichler designs, kept that way by the S district on most lots. The 1957 and 1963 tracts are conventional one-story ranch houses, with second stories added on some of the 1963 lots. The groups from 1965 to 1998 on Trenton Drive, Queen Anne Drive, Steuben Drive and the short terraces off Pome Avenue and Edale Drive are newer and more often two stories; check whether a given terrace has shared areas.

nerd notes
Buying or selling in Remington & Pome: what we check
Buying here
- Check whether the house is in the S single-story combining district: 114 houses here are (most of the Eichler blocks). Under R-1/S a second story is not allowed and height and floor area are capped; outside it, R-1 rules apply. Confirm on the city's zoning map for the address.
- For an Eichler, check the radiant floor heating (age, leaks, whether it still runs), the flat or low-slope roof and its insulation, single-pane glass and any past changes, and ask the city about design review for Eichler remodels.
- For the 1957 and 1963 ranch houses, check the electrical panel and wiring, the sewer lateral, the roof and the permits for any additions.
- City parcel records show no HOA flag here; for the 1976-1998 terrace groups, confirm whether there are shared lanes, maintenance agreements or dues.
- The city's parcel layer puts every house in FEMA flood zone X; confirm on FEMA's flood map for the address, and ask about ADU and SB 9 options with the city, since they differ inside the S district.
Selling here
- Say up front whether your lot is in the S single-story district; it shapes what buyers can build, and they will ask.
- For an Eichler, list the original features that remain and the dates of roof, heating and glass work; buyers compare these closely.
- For a ranch house, gather permits for additions and second stories, and consider a pre-sale inspection of the sewer lateral and electrical panel.
- Buyers compare these blocks with Rancho Verde, Fairbrae and Cherryhill, so present lot size and bedroom count clearly.

faq
Remington & Pome questions, answered
Is this part of Fairbrae or Rancho Verde?
Partly. The 1958 tract around Pome and Quince avenues is called Fairbrae Unit 1 in city records, and the 1960-61 Eichlers on Pimento Avenue and Somerset Drive are the north end of the Rancho Verde tract. The 1957, 1963 and later tracts are separate. Our Fairbrae and Rancho Verde guides cover the blocks east of Hollenbeck and south of Ticonderoga.
When were the houses built?
City parcel records put 167 houses in the 1950s and 143 in the 1960s, with a median year built of 1960. The tracts went up between 1957 and 1965, and small groups followed from 1976 to 2009.
Can you add a second story here?
It depends on the lot. The 114 houses in the S single-story combining district are limited to one story; the others follow R-1 rules. Check the city's zoning map and talk to the planning division before you plan.
Which school districts serve the area?
The Sunnyvale School District for elementary and middle grades and the Fremont Union High School District, according to city parcel records and the state district map. Check the exact address with each district, because attendance boundaries change.
Is any of it in a flood zone?
The city's parcel layer puts all 372 houses in FEMA zone X, outside the mapped special flood hazard areas. Confirm on FEMA's flood map for a specific address.
