the story

How Sunny Arts & Community Center came to be

This guide covers the wedge between El Camino Real and Fremont Avenue, from Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road east to the point where El Camino meets Wolfe Road. Two names share it. Sunny Arts is a city-registered neighborhood association, established in 2005 with about 256 households in the city's registry, on the east side of the Sunnyvale East Channel; its own website spells it SunnyArts. Community Center is the label listing maps use for the blocks around the city's Sunnyvale Community Center on East Remington Drive.

The Community Center campus at 550 E. Remington Drive opened in 1973. Today it holds a performing arts center with the 200-seat Sunnyvale Theatre, a creative arts center with painting and pottery studios, a recreation center, an indoor sports center and a senior center. Its grounds reopened on May 21, 2026, after a renovation that reshaped the ponds, opened about two acres of new open space, and added separate play areas, a game zone, amphitheater-style seating and new walking paths. The heritage valley oak and the veterans memorial plaque stayed.

Next door is the orchard. The city preserved ten acres of Blenheim apricot trees in 1994, and the Historical Society designated it Heritage Orchard Park in 1997 (city maps call it Orchard Heritage Park). An interpretive exhibit on orchard work and fruit canning followed in 2001. In 2008 the Sunnyvale Heritage Park Museum opened beside the orchard in a replica of Bay View, the Murphy family ranch house that the city bought in 1951 and that was torn down in 1961 for Central Expressway.

streets and homes

The streets and the houses

The street signs here read like a museum directory. Artists: Rembrandt, Picasso, Van Dyck, Renoir, Michelangelo, Robbia, Rousseau, Sargent, Manet, Matisse, Klee, Goya, Gainsborough, Hogarth, Lautrec and Cezanne. Composers: Chopin, Schubert, Verdi, Brahms, Mozart, Puccini, Romberg, Offenbach, Debussy, Ives and MacDowell. Up by El Camino and Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road the theme drifts to the sky, with Azure Street, Cirrus Avenue and Cumulus Avenue. We couldn't find a written history of who picked the names.

Sunny Arts itself is a pocket of single-story ranch houses east of the channel, on Rembrandt, Chopin, Schubert, Verdi, Van Dyck, Renoir, Robbia, Rousseau and Sargent. Two recent listing records there, on Robbia and Sargent drives, show houses built in 1968 with about 1,500 to 1,700 square feet on 6,000-square-foot lots. The city zones these blocks R-0 single-family.

West of the channel the mix changes. Sunset Oaks, a 1970s townhome planned development with its own guide, sits between Crescent Avenue and Fremont Avenue on the west side of Picasso Drive. Apartment complexes line East Remington Drive and the blocks near Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road, including Remington Grove, Apricot Pit, Lincoln Glen, Remington Place, Twin Pines Manor, Bali Hai and Oakwood. The Azure, Cirrus and Cumulus blocks carry R-2 planned-development zoning. El Camino Real's frontage falls in the city's El Camino Real Specific Plan, with a supermarket-anchored center near Sunnyvale-Saratoga Road and car dealerships and a hotel farther east.

nerd notes

Buying or selling in Sunny Arts & Community Center: what we check

Buying here

  • Check the school district by exact address. The Cupertino Union and Sunnyvale School District line runs through this area, roughly near Remington Drive, and not along any neighborhood name.
  • Sunny Arts houses are 1968 ranches on 6,000-square-foot lots. Ask about roof age, the electrical panel, original plumbing, the sewer lateral and permits for any additions; homes built before 1978 come with a federal lead-based paint disclosure.
  • Look up the address on FEMA's flood map. The city's flood-zone layer shows small AO (shallow flooding) areas in the Sunny Arts blocks near Van Dyck Drive and El Camino, and along the East Channel just south of El Camino. Valley Water's East Channel upgrade is in design.
  • For townhomes, condos and planned developments, get the HOA documents early: CC&Rs, budget, reserve study, minutes and current dues. Sunset Oaks has its own guide with HOA specifics.
  • Near El Camino Real, read the city's El Camino Real Specific Plan to see what could be built across the street, and visit at rush hour to hear the traffic.

Selling here

  • Lead with the address-level facts buyers compare here: school district (it changes within the area), lot size and walking distance to the Community Center and orchard.
  • For a Sunny Arts ranch, document updates to roof, windows, heating and electrical with permits; 1968 houses get inspected closely.
  • If your home is near the East Channel, have its flood-zone status and any insurance history ready.
  • For HOA homes, order the resale disclosure package early so buyers can review dues and reserves.
