What to look for
- Older wiring, plumbing and foundations are common in houses from before 1920; ask what has been updated, and see our earthquake retrofit grants page.
- Historic status: some are on a city’s historic list or in a conservation area, which can limit changes to the outside; ask the city before you plan work.
- Original details such as trim, windows and porches drive value; check what’s original and what’s been replaced.
- Listings name styles loosely, so some of these houses are “inspired by” the style more than pure examples, and many true examples never say the word.
How we counted
Closed sales of houses (MLS property type “single family home”) with a San Jose address between October 28, 2024 and October 27, 2026, reported to the MLS and read through the IDX feeds that power our home search, with repeat records from different feeds removed (normalized address plus sale date). A house counts for the style when its listing description names it, by the same rules as our Home Styles pages. Price per square foot uses sales with 400 sq ft or more and is compared with the median for all San Jose houses. Neighborhoods are our guides’ outlines, placed by each sale’s map position. Past sales aren’t a forecast or the value of any one home.
