the story
How Monroe Park came to be
Monroe Park is the small piece of Palo Alto on the far side of Adobe Creek. The creek separates it from Charleston Meadows, and Mountain View begins at the end of its streets. The name is the city's own: Monroe Park, a 0.55-acre city park, sits inside it, and the city's park page says the park is named for Monroe Drive, which was named for L.G. Monroe, the original owner of the land that became the Monroe Park subdivision. Palo Alto Neighborhoods lists Monroe Park as one of the city's neighborhood associations.
The county's record-map index lists the Monroe Subdivision (Tract 483) in an early map book, along with the Garden Park subdivision maps (Tracts 620 and 1062) nearby and a much later Monroe Estates map (Tract 9757). City parcel data dates most of the houses to the 1940s and 1950s, with a handful listed with earlier build years and about a fifth rebuilt since 2000.
streets and homes
The streets and the houses
Monroe Drive is the long street, with about half the houses. Miller Avenue and Miller Court sit on the west side and Silva Avenue and Silva Court on the east, ending at the Mountain View line.
Most lots are zoned R-1 (8000), and some blocks are R-1 (10000), so the city's median lot here is about 9,400 sq ft. Original 1940s and 1950s houses sit next to rebuilds; about 20 percent of the houses were built in 2000 or later, and one house carries a historic-inventory status in the city layer. FEMA's flood map shows no high-risk flood zone at any parcel center here, even with the creek along the north side.

School districts
These Palo Alto blocks are not in the Palo Alto Unified School District. The California Department of Education's 2025-26 district map and the Census school district layers place every house here in the Los Altos School District (K-8) and the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District. Attendance areas and district lines change, so check the exact address with the districts before relying on a school assignment.

Buying or selling in Monroe Park: what we check
Buying here
- Check the school districts for the exact address. The state and Census maps put these Palo Alto houses in the Los Altos School District and the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District, not PAUSD.
- Know which zoning the lot has: R-1 (8000), R-1 or R-1 (10000). The minimum lot size in the label affects lot splits and some rules.
- About two-thirds of the houses were built before 1960. Ask for permit history and check the sewer lateral, electrical panel and foundation.
- Lots near Adobe Creek may carry drainage or creek easements. Read the recorded map and title report.
- One house has a historic-inventory status in the city layer; if yours is it, ask the city's planning staff before exterior changes.
Selling here
- Say plainly that the house is in Palo Alto with Los Altos School District and Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District service, and let buyers confirm with the districts.
- State the lot size from county records; lots here run near 9,400 sq ft.
- Name the recorded tract if you know it; the Monroe Subdivision and the Garden Park maps are in the county's index.
- Document updates and permits, since buyers compare original houses with nearby rebuilds.
