the story

How Overfelt Gardens & Las Plumas came to be

The land between US 101 and N. Capitol Ave joined San Jose mostly in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. City annexation records show 'Anne Darling No. 7' on April 29, 1954 bringing in about 16% of today's outline, the King Rd and Las Plumas Ave land now zoned for light industry, then 'McKee No. 1-B' in 1956 and a long run of small 'McKee' and 'Penitencia' annexations through 1979, with a few parcels added from 2003 to 2007.

Its public land clusters on Educational Park Dr. Overfelt Gardens, a city regional park of about 32 acres (address 2145 McKee Rd), sits beside the Independence High campus and the Educational Park Branch Library, which the San Jose Public Library says opened in December 1976 in partnership with the East Side Union High School District; an expanded library opened on May 18, 2013. Miguelita Creek, partly in culverts, runs past the gardens (public maps).

The Mabury Rd side faces jobs and transit: the city's General Plan marks the Mabury employment area along the north-west and an N. Capitol Av/McKee Rd urban village in the east (city growth-area layer), the Berryessa/North San Jose BART station sits just north of Mabury Rd, and the McKee light rail stop is on N. Capitol Ave at the south-east corner.
