the story
How Berry Park & The Woods came to be
This guide takes its name from two associations on the city's map: Berry Park, a homeowners association on streets named for berries and trees, and The Woods, the association area on The Woods Dr. A third association, Park Place, covers the 'Park' streets toward Monterey Rd, and the Frontier Village association reaches up from Branham Ln. That last name goes back to Frontier Village, a Western-themed amusement park that ran at Monterey Rd and Branham Ln from 1961 to 1980; archive records say its land became Edenvale Garden Park, just across Branham Ln.
City annexation records show the land joining San Jose in pieces between 1955 and 1981. Early 'Monterey Park' pieces along Monterey Rd came in 1955-1957, and most of the rest followed in 1964-1968 ('Edenvale No. 1' and 'No. 6', 'Snell No. 8'). Building came later here than in the tracts west of Snell Ave: city sewer records date the Berry Park streets to 1974-1975, the Park Place streets to 1976-1977 and Deer Run Cir with its courts to 1986. The city's tract layer counts 13 recorded tract maps with about 635 lots.
The rail line along Monterey Rd (Union Pacific's Coast Subdivision on public maps, also used by Caltrain) runs down the east edge, and Capitol Caltrain station is a short way north of the Capitol Expwy corner.
streets and homes
The streets and the houses
Berry Park's streets carry berry and tree names: Silverberry Dr, Juneberry Ct, Sweetberry Ct, Wolfberry Ct, Sugar Maple Dr, Pitch Pine Ct, River Ash Ct, Shellbark Dr, Spoonwood Ct and Corkwood Ct, plus Stone Canyon Dr and Pinon Pl. The Park Place streets east of them start with 'Park': Park Sharon Dr, Park Paxton Pl, Park Ellen Dr, Park Arcadia Dr, Park Sommers Way and a run of short Park courts such as Park Oxford Pl and Park Warren Pl. Skyway Dr enters from Monterey Rd, and Rosenbaum Ave reaches the north end from Snell Ave.
The county parcel map shows about 620 single-lot homes, most on lots of about 6,000 to 8,900 sq ft (median about 6,500), and listing records for Berry Park are detached houses. Deer Run Cir, Saddletree Ct, Archbow Ct, Raindance Ct and Lost Trail Ct near Branham Ln hold about 60 small parcels for attached homes. North of Rosenbaum Ave, The Woods Dr serves apartment buildings on several large private parcels, about 70 acres on the parcel map (listing records describe a rental complex).
Zoning is planned development on The Woods parcels and much of Berry Park (A(PD) and R-1-8(PD) on the city map), with plain R-1-8 single-family on the rest. There is no city park inside the wedge.
