the story
How Almaden Foothills & New Almaden came to be
Long before the tracts, this was mining country. The National Park Service describes New Almaden as a National Historic Landmark district in a canyon south of San Jose, where quicksilver (mercury) mining began in 1845, ore was worked in the Cinnabar Hills, and the Quicksilver Mining Company closed the mine in 1912. Casa Grande, built in 1854 at 21350 Almaden Rd as the mine manager's house and office, now holds the New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum, established in 1997. Santa Clara County bought the hills above the village in 1974 for what is now Almaden Quicksilver County Park, about 4,160 acres on the county park layer. The city's map shows New Almaden as a National Register District, entirely inside this guide.
Water shaped the rest. Valley Water built Almaden Reservoir, at the south end of this guide on Alamitos Rd, and Guadalupe Reservoir, off Hicks Rd on the west side, in the mid-1930s; its pages list about 1,590 and 3,415 acre-feet of storage. Alamitos Creek, Guadalupe Creek and Calero Creek drain the hills toward the valley, and the city's trail records map reaches of the Los Alamitos Creek Trail (Portswood Cir to Harry Rd) and the Calero Creek Trail (Harry Rd to San Vicente Ave) here. Santa Teresa County Park covers the hills on the east side and part of Calero County Park the south-east corner.
The city tracts came last. City sewer records date most street sewer mains to 1975-1984: Anjou Creek Cir in 1973, Springpath Ln and Skyfarm Dr in 1977, Whitbourne Dr, Foxhurst Way, Mountain Shadows Rd and McAbee Rd in 1979, Gold Creek Way and Grimley Ln in 1980, Pierce Ranch Rd in 1981 and Briar Ranch Ln in 1990, with the Via streets off Guadalupe Mines Rd in 2002. The city's association map names the pieces: Pierce Ranch, Montego, Brookfield-Campagna and Creekside Almaden in the west, and Mountain Shadows, Almaden Springs, Almaden Crossing, Orchard Creek, Almaden Mockingbird, Silver Crest of Almaden Valley, California Ridge and Almaden Oaks around McKean Rd.

The streets and the houses
West of Leyland Park Dr and south of Camden Ave, Montego Dr and Ct, Kingsland Ct, Skyfarm Dr, Springpath Ln, Circle Hill Dr, Whitbourne Dr, Broadacres Dr, Pierce Ranch Rd, Whispering Pines Dr, Rolling Oaks Dr and McAbee Rd rise toward the hills, with Lookout Bend, Box Canyon Rd and Rockview Ct above them on lots of about 20,000 sq ft and up. Most lots on the lower streets run about 7,000 to 9,800 sq ft. Closer to Hicks Rd, the 2002 Via streets (Via Campagna, Via Cortina, Via Fortuna, Via Lugano, Via Saronno, Via Campo Verde and Via Campo Aureo) and the creek-named lanes beside them (Sage Creek, Thyme Creek, Sycamore Creek, Lavender Creek and others) hold small-lot homes of about 3,300 to 6,800 sq ft.
South of the Almaden Country Club and Graystone guides, around the end of Almaden Expwy at McKean Rd and Harry Rd, a second cluster of 1970s-80s tracts fills the slopes: Anjou Creek Cir, Calcaterra Dr, Martwood Way, Portswood Dr and Cir, Scarsdale Pl, Foxhurst Way, Queensbridge Way, Mountain Shadows Rd, Gold Creek Way, Grimley Ln, Kiser Dr and Copper Peak Ln, with the Silver-named streets (Silver Lode Ln, Silver Fox Dr, Silver Canyon Dr and others) near the expressway. Lots range from about 2,600 sq ft on planned-development streets such as Sleepy Creek Dr and Copper Peak Ln to about 18,000 to 20,000 sq ft on Gold Creek Way and Grimley Ln.
Past the last tracts, Almaden Rd runs south beside Alamitos Creek into New Almaden, where county parcels line Almaden Rd and Bertram Rd below the park hills. East of the expressway's end, McKean Rd, San Vicente Ave, Fortini Rd, Shillingsburg Ave and the courts off them (Tierra Sombra, Tierra Grande, Lone Oak, Mann Oak, Calero Creek and Chona) are mostly county land with lots of about one to several acres. Expect everything from 1970s two-story tract plans to custom hillside homes and older village houses; check permit history with the city or the county, depending on the parcel.

Buying or selling in Almaden Foothills & New Almaden: what we check
Buying here
- City or county: check the tax bill. Unincorporated Santa Clara County land here includes Almaden Rd through New Almaden (nearly every addressed parcel), Bertram Rd, most of Cinnabar Hills Rd, Mountain Dr, Rome Dr and Alamitos Rd; McKean Rd beyond the city tracts (most parcels), San Vicente Ave, Fortini Rd, Shillingsburg Ave, Hunters Hill Rd, Lost View Rd, Timothy Ln and the Tierra Sombra, Tierra Grande, Lone Oak, Mann Oak, Calero Creek, Chona, Davis and Woehl courts; Whispering Oaks Dr, Sprawling Oaks Ct, Carroll Oaks Way, Tyr Ln, Walton Ave and Bruce Way; part of Mockingbird Hill Ln; Hicks Rd; and Country View Dr, Ct and Ln and Lago Vista Ct. County parcels use county planning, zoning and building permits; confirm water and sewer service, since rural parcels may use wells or septic systems.
- Wildfire: the city's Wildland-Urban Interface map covers nearly every addressed parcel. The state's 2025 maps put about 340 parcels, mostly on Almaden Rd, Bertram Rd and other county roads, in High zones of the state responsibility area, and about 740 city parcels (Montego Dr, Copper Peak Ln, the Via streets, Broadacres Dr, Skyfarm Dr and others) in High zones of the local responsibility area. Read the natural hazard disclosure; defensible-space and building-code rules can apply.
- Hillside and flood map layers: state landslide zones cover about 56% of the land and about 250 addressed parcels (Almaden Rd, Bertram Rd, Montego Dr, Cinnabar Hills Rd, McKean Rd and others), and about 79% of the land is outside the city's Urban Growth Boundary. FEMA Zone A and AE strips follow the creeks on San Vicente Ave, Fortini Rd, McKean Rd and Almaden Rd. Ask for geotechnical reports and check the address on the FEMA map.
- New Almaden: the county maps a New Almaden historic area of about 2,600 acres around the village, and the city's map shows it as a National Register District. County zoning can carry an '-h' historic preservation overlay that brings design review and referral to the county's Historical Heritage Commission; check the parcel's zoning before planning exterior changes.
- Planned-development streets (Sleepy Creek Dr, Copper Peak Ln, Kiser Dr, Minoru Dr, Big Sur Dr, the Via streets and creek-named lanes) come with recorded maps and, often, HOA documents: read the CC&Rs, budget and reserve study.
Selling here
- State the jurisdiction (city or county) and the water and sewer service up front; buyers on McKean Rd and in New Almaden will ask.
