the story
How Thousand Oaks & Erikson came to be
Before the tracts, this stretch of Almaden Rd was Robertsville. The San Jose Public Library's history of the road lists the Five Mile House, also called Robertsville, at Branham Ln as a stage stop on the way to the New Almaden mines, and the city's annexation map still labels most of this guide's annexations 'Robertsville', with smaller 'Coleman' and 'Edenvale' pieces.
The tracts came with annexation. About half of the land joined the city in the 1960s and a third in the 1970s, through about 30 small annexations between 1959 and 1978, with one more in 1995. Listing records give the build years: 1965 on Tonino Dr, 1970 on Oyster Bay Dr and Lynfield Ln, and 1974 and 1976 on Thousand Oaks Dr.
Public buildings followed the houses. The branch library here was renamed the Pearl Avenue Branch in 1974 (it had been the Edenvale Branch), and an expanded Pearl Avenue Branch opened on August 9, 2008, one of the projects of the 2000 branch library bond (San Jose Public Library timeline). VTA's light rail line runs along the east side, with Capitol and Branham stations in the SR 87 median and Ohlone-Chynoweth station inside the outline.

The streets and the houses
Pearl Ave and Branham Ln divide the guide into quarters. West of Pearl Ave and north of Branham Ln, Thousand Oaks Dr, Normington Way, Edenbury Ln, Glenridge Dr, Woodgrove Ln, Glenmont Dr, Lynfield Ln and Downswick Dr curve around Thousand Oaks Park and Terrell Park. East of Pearl Ave, Clarkston Dr, Hermiston Dr, Lewiston Dr, Midvale Ln, Upton Way, Bend Ave, Haines Ave and Wessex Dr run toward SR 87.
South of Branham Ln, the city's Erikson and Tatra association areas take in Minas Dr, Tonino Dr, Corrales Dr, Quicksilver Dr, Oyster Bay Dr, Eagle Lake Dr, Rawlings Dr, Calle de Verde, Corte de Plata, Tatra Dr, New Trier Ave, Kozera Dr and Severance Dr, plus a group of river-named courts (Kings River Ct, Columbia River Ct, Cimarron River Ct, Clear River Ct). Expect single-story ranch homes and two-story tract homes from the 1960s and 1970s, many remodeled or expanded.
R-1-8 single-family zoning covers about 36% of the land, open space about 7% (parks and the river corridor) and general commercial zoning about 6%. The General Plan shows Regional Commercial land along Cherry Ave by SR 85, Neighborhood/Community Commercial land along Capitol Expwy and at Pearl Ave and Branham Ln, and Transit Residential land along Pearl Ave near the Ohlone-Chynoweth station; planned-development residential zoning covers pockets by Terner Way, Joseph Speciale Dr and La Crescent Loop.
