the story

How Stonegate & Windmill Springs came to be

Coyote Creek loops through the middle of this guide, and much of the creek corridor is public land: the city's Coyote Creek Parkchain, Los Lagos Golf Course and the north end of Hellyer County Park. The houses fill the land on either side, between Senter Rd and US 101.

Most of it joined the city in the 1960s, about 64% of the land on the city's annexation map, through Evergreen, McKinley and Tully annexations; the Evergreen No. 68 annexation of July 10, 1961 is the largest single piece (about an eighth of the guide), and annexations continued into 1981. Listing records show houses on Sherlock Dr and Bellingham Dr in the Stonegate tracts built in 1967, and condos on Lone Bluff Way near Senter Rd built in 1983.

Public facilities followed decades later. Los Lagos Golf Course, an 18-hole public course on about 105 acres of city park land leased to an operator, opened in 2002 according to course listings, and the Tully Community Branch Library opened at 880 Tully Rd on January 22, 2005, beside the city's Tully Community Ballfields. Franklin-McKinley closed Ramblewood Elementary, on the east side of the creek, after the 2024-25 school year.

streets and homes

The streets and the houses

West of the creek, McLaughlin Ave runs north to south past the Stonegate tracts (Gassmann Dr, Sherlock Dr, Bellingham Dr, Apollo Dr, Kendrick Cir, Idlewood Dr), and the Windmill Springs streets around Umbarger Rd and Aetna Way carry -mill names (Bendmill Way, Thornmill Way, Crossmill Ct, Baysmill Ct). Near Senter Rd, Lone Bluff Way and a set of river-named courts (Rock River Ct, Platte River Ct, Trinity River Ct) hold condo and townhome complexes.

East of the creek, Tuers Rd and Yerba Buena Rd lead to the Ramblewood tracts south of Capitol Expwy (Lightland Rd, Marfrance Dr, Stayner Rd, Oakview Rd, Valdosta Rd, Kitchener Cir), and a run of streets north of Capitol Expwy and near Tuers Rd uses names such as Bilbo Dr, Brandybuck Way, Shadowfax Dr, Isengard Dr and Woodelf Dr.

Single-family zoning dominates: R-1-8 covers about 27% of the land on the city zoning map and R-1-8 planned developments another 18%, so many tracts have their own permit conditions. Open space covers about 18% of the zoning map. Everything is City of San Jose except the north end of Hellyer County Park, between Coyote Creek and US 101 north of Hellyer Ave, which is unincorporated Santa Clara County park land with no homes.
