How Moreland West & Hathaway Park came to be
Two names share this guide. Moreland West is the neighborhood association area the City of San Jose's map draws between Saratoga Ave and San Tomas Aquino Rd from Payne Ave to Campbell Ave; Hathaway Park is the 6.7-acre city park at Vallejo Dr and Colombo Dr near its middle. The city's polygon also takes in a corner of the City of Campbell, which this guide leaves out: the guide is San Jose's part only.
The Moreland name is the school district's. California's state landmark listing for Moreland School puts the site at Payne Ave and Saratoga Ave, at this guide's north corner, and says the district began in 1851 as a subscription school meeting in private homes and took Zechariah Moreland's name in 1862. The district's middle school, Moreland Middle, is inside the guide on Student Ln.
City annexation records show San Jose taking in the land in about 10 pieces: about a third in the 'Moreland No. 2-A' annexation of May 5, 1955, more in the 'Latimer' and 'Payne' annexations of 1957 and 1958, and the last pieces on September 1, 1980. The city's tract map shows 13 recorded tracts with about 800 lots, including three large ones of about 125 to 200 lots each, and Westgate Center fills the Saratoga Ave and Campbell Ave corner.

Hamilton Ave splits the guide. North of it, around Hathaway Park, are Vallejo Dr, Colombo Dr, Hilton Ave, McKinnon Dr, Southwood Dr, Los Felice Dr, Los Alamos Dr, Los Olivos Dr, Lamore Dr, Garrans Dr, Parkview Ave and Atherton Ave; south of it are Duvall Dr, Fallbrook Ave, Mossbrook Ave and Cir, Castro Dr and Student Ln, and Parkwest Dr crosses from one side to the other. Latimer Ave runs diagonally from San Tomas Aquino Rd across Hamilton Ave to Saratoga Ave, past Latimer School.
About 690 parcels are zoned R-1. Their median lot is about 6,900 sq ft, but the R-1-5 blocks near Saratoga Ave and Hathaway Park (Southwood Dr, Los Felice Dr, Los Alamos Dr, Los Olivos Dr, McKinnon Dr and part of Vallejo Dr) are larger: about 110 parcels there have a median of about 10,150 sq ft. Hamilton Ave and Atherton Ave carry some R-M and UR (Urban Residential) zoning, and a few R-2 lots sit on San Tomas Aquino Rd and Colombo Dr.
The Campbell line runs street by street. San Jose: Duvall Dr, Fallbrook Ave, Parkwest Dr, Mossbrook Ave and Cir, Latimer Ave, Student Ln, and Castro Dr from Campbell Ave north to about Rio Serena Ave. Campbell (95008): Calado Ave and Ct, Castro Ct, Ensenada Dr, La Pradera Dr, Palo Santo Dr, Rio Serena Ave, Villarita Dr and the north end of Castro Dr. Campbell Ave is San Jose on both sides from Saratoga Ave to Castro Dr; east of Castro Dr its north side is Campbell and its south side San Jose. San Tomas Aquino Rd is San Jose on both sides from Payne Ave to Latimer Ave.

School districts
Census school-district maps put the whole guide in the Moreland School District for elementary and middle school and the Campbell Union High School District for high school. Two Moreland district schools are inside: Moreland Middle (grades 6-8) on Student Ln and Latimer (K-8) on Latimer Ave; the federal school directory lists both as district schools, not charters. Gussie M. Baker Elementary (Moreland) is just south across Campbell Ave on Bucknall Rd. Attendance boundaries change, so check the exact address with the district.
Getting around
- VTA route 57 runs on Saratoga Ave, with stops at Saratoga & Payne, Latimer, Atherton, Graves and Campbell; route 26 runs on Campbell Ave, with stops at Campbell & Saratoga, Fallbrook, Castro, Ensenada and San Tomas Aquino (VTA route pages).
- Saratoga Ave leads north to I-280 (the interchange is about 1.7 miles straight-line from the center) and south toward SR 85; Lawrence Expwy starts at Saratoga Ave just southwest of the guide.
- VTA light rail: Winchester station in Campbell is about 2.2 miles straight-line. Caltrain: Santa Clara station is about 4.8 miles straight-line (county rail-station layer).
- Bikes: the city's bikeway map shows separated (Class 4) bikeways on Saratoga Ave and Hamilton Ave, bike lanes on Campbell Ave and Payne Ave, and buffered bike lanes on San Tomas Aquino Rd.
- From the middle of the guide, Westgate Center is about 0.2 mile and Hathaway Park about 0.3 mile straight-line.

- Mailing address: county address records list San Jose 95130 for nearly every address (95129 on Saratoga Ave, 95117 on Payne Ave). The Census ZIP map and the city's street file draw ZIP 95070 over a few streets near Saratoga Ave, such as Los Felice Dr and Los Alamos Dr, so if a listing shows a Saratoga 95070 address, confirm it with the county.
- Flood zone: FEMA's map shows Zone D (flood hazard not studied) for almost the whole guide. Check the current FEMA map for the address and ask your lender and insurer how they treat Zone D.
