San Mateo County

San Mateo County was formed in April 1856 out of the southern portion of then-San Francisco County with a population of fewer than 5,000 people and little in the way of commerce. Today, more than 764,000 people call San Mateo County home and it stretches the boundary of Silicon Valley northward.

Innovation thrives here in industries including bioscience, computer software, green technology, hospitality, financial management, health care, education and transportation. The County prides itself on how that prosperity fosters its commitment to protecting and enhancing the health, safety, welfare and natural resources of the community.

Within its 455 square miles bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and San Francisco Bay to the east, the County is known for its mild climate and scenic vistas. Nearly three quarters of the county is open space and agriculture remains a vital contributor to our economy and culture.

Why San Bruno?

San Bruno has a population of about 43 thousand. San Bruno is located only 10 miles south of San Francisco, but offers a more suburban feel.

If you enjoy outdoorsy activities, San Bruno is hard to beat. The weather is usually not too hot nor cold  and San Bruno is home to some of the largest parks in the entire peninsula: San Bruno City Park and San Bruno County Park.

Living in San Bruno is also extremely convenient. You can travel to San Francisco and San Jose in a short amount of time. San Bruno is also extremely walkable, with restaurants and shops located all around.

SAN BRUNO HISTORY

The Ohlone Village Urebure was originally located in what is now San Bruno. After the founding of the San Francisco de Asis Mission, the land was used as a pasture for the mission livestock. Later, the area was included in the Rancho Buriburi and became prominent in the dairy farm business.

San Bruno was named in tribute to Spanish explorer Captain Bruno Hecate. Substantial development occurred in San Bruno after the well known 1906 earthquake. The city was officially established in 1914.
