the story
How Altamont, Taaffe & Moody Roads came to be
This was Rose Hill. The Town's 2016 history anthology says the one Taaffe heir who made the ranch his permanent home named his 1,100-acre share Rose Hill and built a 12-room house at the top of today's Taaffe Road. From 1887 to 1901 it was a stock and grain ranch, including hay for racehorses. A 1904 map in the anthology shows that section taking in the land near today's Byrne Preserve. After 1901 the ranch went into decline. The main house later burned, and the ranch was lost to foreclosure during the Depression. Altamont Road itself was Elizabeth Avenue until the Town Council renamed it in 1962.
Horses shaped the next chapter. In the mid-1940s a buyer of about 30 acres between Altamont Road and Central Drive built a six-stall, gambrel-roofed barn, which later owners expanded into the Westwind complex. In 1975 the Town bought part of the roughly 15-acre property, and the owner donated the rest along with the 24,000-square-foot barn (Town General Plan). Next door, a 55-acre grassland parcel was donated to the Nature Conservancy in 1967, and the Town bought it in 1968 on the condition that it stay natural. A 21-acre corridor linking it toward Hidden Villa was bought later. The 2007 General Plan lists Byrne Preserve at 88 acres, the Town's largest open space.
Moody Road follows Adobe Creek, which the anthology says rises on Black Mountain. The Town's history page notes the creek was the line between two ranchos, La Purísima Concepción and Rancho San Antonio. Adobe Creek Lodge Road is named for a recreation property that the Town's ban on commercial uses eventually closed. Farther up Moody Road is Hidden Villa, a 1,600-acre preserve and educational farm with roots in the 1920s. The anthology credits it with California's first youth hostel. Midpen has bought most of the land south of Moody Road, including Rancho San Antonio and the Neary Quarry ridge, so the hills behind these streets stay open.
streets and homes
The streets and the houses
Altamont Road is the spine, about 2.2 miles from Page Mill Road southeast to Moody Road near Foothill College. Taaffe Road climbs to it from Elena Road. Moody Road runs from El Monte Road west along Adobe Creek to Page Mill Road. Near Page Mill are Central Drive, Buena Vista Drive, Sherlock Road, Briones Court and Menalto Drive. Around Byrne Preserve are Byrne Park Lane, Appaloosa Way, Deer Springs Way, Dezahara Way and Julietta Lane. Toward Foothill College are Corbetta, Vinedo, Ridgewood and Crescent lanes, Padre Court and Hidden Springs Court. South of Moody Road are Murietta Lane, Chaparral Way, Blue Oaks Place, Adobe Creek Lodge Road, Old Snakey Road, Moody Springs Court, Bassett Lane and Rhus Ridge.
Many of these are private roads. The Town's March 2026 list marks Central Drive, Buena Vista Drive, Sherlock Road, Appaloosa Way, Chaparral Way, Old Snakey Road, Bassett Lane, Rhus Ridge and many of the short lanes as private. Altamont, Taaffe and Moody roads are public. County parcel polygons put the median addressed parcel at about 1.2 acres, and about one in five is 2 acres or more. Slopes are steeper here, and the Town's lot unit factor shrinks as average slope rises. Allowed floor area falls to 5,000 sq ft per unit at 30% slope, so two lots of the same acreage can have very different limits.
The west end has a jurisdiction twist. County parcel records list Altamont Circle, Canyon Road, Hidden Villa and about 20 parcels on upper Moody Road as unincorporated Santa Clara County land, and Census maps agree. They still use Los Altos Hills 94022 addresses. Upper Moody Road itself runs along the Town line. On those parcels the county, not the Town, handles planning and building permits, and wells or septic systems are possible.

Buying or selling in Altamont, Taaffe & Moody Roads: what we check
Buying here
- Confirm jurisdiction parcel by parcel. Altamont Circle, Canyon Road, Hidden Villa and some upper Moody Road addresses are unincorporated county land with Los Altos Hills addresses, so county planning and permits apply.
- Fire hazard varies street by street. Our check of the state's 2025 hazard map shows Moody Road and the canyon streets south of it (Murietta Lane, Chaparral Way, Rhus Ridge, Adobe Creek Lodge Road, Moody Court) largely Very High, while Altamont Road mostly maps as Moderate. Get insurance quotes and a defensible-space check early.
- Many lanes are private. Read the road maintenance agreement and budget for your share of paving and drainage.
- Slope sets the build limits. Ask for the lot's MFA/MDA worksheet, and expect geotechnical questions. About half the parcels sit in the county's mapped fault-rupture zone, and about a dozen near Adobe Creek fall in the county's 100-year flood layer.
- Ask whether the home is on sewer or septic, which well or water provider serves it, and whether any pathway or equestrian easements cross the lot.
Selling here
- State the jurisdiction (Town or county) and the hazard zones up front, with the natural hazard disclosure ready before showings.
- Gather the road maintenance agreement, septic or sewer records, and any barn, arena or accessory-building permits.
- Provide the Town's MFA/MDA numbers for the lot. On sloped lots they can differ a lot from what the acreage suggests.
- Document any defensible-space work or recent fire inspection for buyers and their insurers.
