San Mateo County

San Mateo County was formed in April 1856 out of the southern portion of then-San Francisco County with a population of fewer than 5,000 people and little in the way of commerce. Today, more than 764,000 people call San Mateo County home and it stretches the boundary of Silicon Valley northward.

SAN CARLOS CITY HISTORY

The first known inhabitants of San Carlos were the Ohlone Indians. The Ohlone hunted deer and small game and relied largely on the bay and ocean for food. They used tule reeds that grew near the bay and along the many creeks in the area to build their homes and canoes.

San Carlos experienced its first big spurt in population with 3,520 residents in the year 1940. In 1944, Dalmo Victor founded the city's first large electronics plant, thus opening the path to industrialization in the city.
