About Maywood
Maywood is one of the modern tracts that John Calder Mackay and his partner Lawton Shurtleff built as Mackay Homes in the 1950s. An Eichler publication dates it to about 1954–1955 and places it just north of Stevens Creek Boulevard, on Woodhams Road and nearby streets such as Cameron Way, Mauricia Avenue and Atherton Drive. Listings usually call it Maywood Park.
Santa Clara County’s historical map index shows the tract was mapped in units. Maywood Unit No. 5 (Tract 1382), recorded in September 1955, laid out Atherton Drive, Cronin Drive and Manly Court along Pruneridge Avenue. Our 2026 listing on Cronin Drive gave that house a 1956 build date.
Mackay Homes hired Anshen & Allen, the firm behind many early Eichlers. The houses are low, one-story modern designs; many open to a private front courtyard, and some Mackay models used Dutch doors that work as both windows and entries, per the same publication.
The publication counts Maywood among the best-preserved Mackay tracts, along with Monta Loma in Mountain View. Santa Clara hasn’t given it historic status: in 2015 the city council left identifiable tract-home areas out of its proposed historic preservation ordinance, and a commissioner said no Maywood properties were on the city’s list, per Silicon Valley Voice.

Streets where listings name Mackays
The first six come from the Eichler publication and the 1955 county map; the rest are streets where resale listings call homes Mackays. Not every house on them is a Mackay: Mauricia Avenue also runs through a 1955 tract by another developer, per the county’s map index.

the nerd check
Buying or selling a Mackay
- HeatIn Monta Loma, Mackays were built with a wall furnace or forced air rather than radiant slab heat. Ask what this house has now and when it was replaced.
- Slab or raisedIn Monta Loma almost half the Mackays sit on slabs and the rest on raised foundations. Check this house before you plan plumbing or flooring work.
- Is it a Mackay?Listings use the name loosely, and other developers built on some of the same streets. Check the year built in county records and look for the courtyard plan.
- Glass and woodGlass walls in wooden frames and original single-pane glass are common. Ask what was upgraded and whether it was permitted.
- Santa Clara rulesSanta Clara hasn’t designated Maywood historic, and in 2016 the city approved a second story on one Maywood home, per an Eichler publication. Ask Santa Clara’s Planning Division what applies to the parcel before you plan an addition.
