Blog > Caltrain Went Electric: What It Means if You’re Buying Near the Tracks
Caltrain changed in a big way in September 2024, when it switched to a fully electrified schedule. If you’re thinking about buying near a station, here’s what changed, what didn’t, and how to size up a home near the tracks.
What changed
Caltrain’s announcement of fully electrified service is dated September 21, 2024; the first electric trains had already carried passengers that August. Electric trains run from San Francisco’s 4th & King station to San Jose’s Tamien station. Bridge repairs put buses in place of Diridon–Tamien trains from June 2025, and Caltrain’s January 2026 schedule release brought electric trains back to Tamien.
What didn’t
South County isn’t electrified. Capitol, Blossom Hill, Morgan Hill, San Martin and Gilroy get weekday commute-hour diesel trains, and riders change to electric trains at San Jose Diridon with a short cross-platform transfer, according to Caltrain. Caltrain says it plans battery-equipped trains for that stretch.
Service also still varies by stop. Broadway in Burlingame has weekend service only, Stanford opens for game days, College Park sees a few weekday trains, and Atherton closed in 2020.
Sizing up a home near the tracks
- Ride your real commute. Check Caltrain’s current timetable for your stop at the hours you’d travel; express and local patterns differ by station.
- Listen at the crossing. Trains sound their horns at street-level crossings. Visit at commute hours and note how close the home is to one.
- Ask about crossing projects. Several Peninsula cities are planning to separate road crossings from the tracks. Ask the city about any project near the home.
- Walk it. Straight-line distance understates real walks where tracks, creeks or freeways cut off streets.
