Fairglen: An Eichler Haven

Nowhere do residents love their neighborhood — and Eichlers — as much as Fairglen in San Jose. Located adjacent to the larger Willow Glen neighborhood, this tract of homes built by Joseph Eichler in the 1950s and 60s retains its original constructions as an emblem of history. Each year, Fairglen residents host an Eichler Home Tour celebrating the tract’s unique collection of California Modern homes. They sport “I Love Eichlers” apparel and pore over the architectural details — the color palette of the exterior, the George Nelson clocks, the stone of the countertops. Local craftsmen set up booths selling original Eichler accents, like authentic Eichler house numbers to replace original ones from decades ago. Here, mid-mod aesthetics reign.

Much of what residents love about the Fairglen neighborhood is its 50s aesthetics and architecture, but what makes them lifelong residents is the 50s friendliness of the neighbors. Residents in Fairglen love their community with a unique unity rarely found in other residential communities. Even with over 300 homes in the neighborhood and no community center or association, Fairglen residents make it a point to reach out and get to know one another, whether its over dinner or with a move-in gift.
