Ancient trees, sprawling manors, and fluted lampposts mark the most desirable, affluent neighborhood in all of Palo Alto. Home to celebrities like former 49ers quarterback Steve Young and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Crescent Park is rich with history, style and, well, riches. As visitors exit the US 101, this neighborhood is often the first impression they get of the city. Homes in Crescent Park run for millions more than the already-high average in Palo Alto and are even more difficult to snag for its high demand.
Crescent Park’s homes are largely pre World War II. The neighborhood exemplifies the work of architect Birge Clarke, who pioneered the city’s proliferation of the iconic “Early California” style of homes. The architectural theme throughout Crescent Park is his Spanish Colonial influence, their handsome and regal structures complemented by the leafy oaks that shade the entire neighborhood. Mediterranean and East Coast traditional styles are also popular. Homes here often reach 6,000 to 7,000 sq ft and property sizes as large as 20,000 sq ft can be found.
Crescent Park is bordered by San Francisquito Creek, which formerly caused street flooding a couple of decades ago but is no longer as imminent of a concern. The neighborhood is situated right in between US Route 101, which offers easy commute and an adjacent shopping plaza, and Middlefield Rd. University Ave cuts through the neighborhood, which leads straight to the vibrant Palo Alto downtown and is adjacent to the Palo Alto Caltrain station. Despite being so close to busy highways and train tracks, the neighborhood itself is secluded enough to retain its quiet safety. Along its southern border is Eleanor Pardee Park, which offers playgrounds and the Palo Alto Demonstration Gardens that showcase local flora as well as a fruit and vegetable garden. Also to the south of the neighborhood, families can find recreation in Rinconada Library, Pool, and Park, which includes tennis courts, a community theatre, and a zoo.
