San Mateo County

San Mateo County was formed in April 1856 out of the southern portion of then-San Francisco County with a population of fewer than 5,000 people and little in the way of commerce. Today, more than 764,000 people call San Mateo County home and it stretches the boundary of Silicon Valley northward.

Innovation thrives here in industries including bioscience, computer software, green technology, hospitality, financial management, health care, education and transportation. The County prides itself on how that prosperity fosters its commitment to protecting and enhancing the health, safety, welfare and natural resources of the community.

Within its 455 square miles bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and San Francisco Bay to the east, the County is known for its mild climate and scenic vistas. Nearly three quarters of the county is open space and agriculture remains a vital contributor to our economy and culture.

Why San Gregorio?

San Gregorio is one of the smallest towns in San Mateo County and the entire bay area with a population of just over 200. It is directly south of Half Moon Bay and east of Highway 1. A national weather station is located within the town, and has been operating since 1954.

Although San Gregorio is technically an unincorporated area within Half Moon Bay, it has gained attention and is known for it's general store and historical home.

The community feeling of Atherton is unique within the Bay Area as it intentionally maintains its green atmosphere, having many tree lined streets and open spaces canopied by large oaks, redwoods, and cedar trees.

SAN GREGORIO HISTORY

The first European land exploration of Alta California, the Spanish Portolà expedition, passed through the San Gregorio area on its way north. Franciscan missionary Juan Crespi noted that San Gregorio would be a nice area to build a misson; however, a mission was never founded within San Gregorio.

San Gregorio was named after Pope Gregory I and was a booming town in the 1850s, when wealthy San Franciscans would travel to the San Gregorio House by stagecoach to enjoy fishing, hunting, sea bathing, and boat races. San Gregorio's extraordinary store was built in 1889 and offered a wide selection of lanterns, saddles, books, baked-goods, live music, and a bar.
