San Mateo County

San Mateo County was formed in April 1856 out of the southern portion of then-San Francisco County with a population of fewer than 5,000 people and little in the way of commerce. Today, more than 764,000 people call San Mateo County home and it stretches the boundary of Silicon Valley northward.

Innovation thrives here in industries including bioscience, computer software, green technology, hospitality, financial management, health care, education and transportation. The County prides itself on how that prosperity fosters its commitment to protecting and enhancing the health, safety, welfare and natural resources of the community.

Within its 455 square miles bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and San Francisco Bay to the east, the County is known for its mild climate and scenic vistas. Nearly three quarters of the county is open space and agriculture remains a vital contributor to our economy and culture.

Why El Granada?

El Granada is a small town located just north of Half Moon Bay with a population around 6000. El Granada offers those who live in it a rural-suburban mix, containing lots of greenery, access to the water, and many hiking trails.

El Granada houses Pillar Point Harbor, one of the last working harbors in the area. It is a very walkable town and is great for those who love water activities, such as fishing and surfing. Although a small town, this allows for El Granada to have a more tightnit community and is still close enough for easy access to larger, neighboring cities.

EL GRANADA HISTORY

El Granada was originally planned by the Ocean Shore Railroad as the “Jewel of the Coast,” a grandiose resort to rival Atlantic City. The town was laid out by architect, Daniel Burnham, however, the railroad failing to be established stopped its planned development as being a seaside getaway for those in San Francisco. However, in the second half of the 20th century, has given rise to many beautiful homes and restorations of authentic, 19th century cottages.

El Granada was originally named after Granada, Spain, but the Post Office mistakenly recorded the name as El Granada instead.
