San Mateo County was formed in April 1856 out of the southern portion of then-San Francisco County with a population of fewer than 5,000 people and little in the way of commerce. Today, more than 764,000 people call San Mateo County home and it stretches the boundary of Silicon Valley northward.

MONTARA HISTORY

The Montara area was first settled by farmers in the late nineteenth century with Point Montara Lighthouse being established in 1875. A commercial flower farm was established in 1900 and in 1905, Montara became a stop on the new Ocean Shore Railroad. The trains encouraged visitors to the area, but development of the community was still very slow.

Real growth in Montara began in the 1950s as more people moved away from San Francisco during the postwar boom. Even as Montara has continued to grow a bit, it still has its rural, beach town vibe.
