Fresh air, winding roads, and luxurious mansions. Secluded from the busy rush of Palo Alto’s urban living, the Palo Alto Hills neighborhood is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts and lovers of lush serenity. With plenty of opportunities for hiking, fishing, and horseback riding for nature-lovers — all in your own neighborhood — the hills are alive with fauna who live alongside the lifelong homeowners. Backyards here extend into the Arastradero Preserve, made up of over 500 acres of wild grasslands, forest, and trails. The Palo Alto Hills Golf & Country Club offers upscale recreation including an 18-hole golf course and swimming, and even throws an annual holiday party. Although the hundred-or-so homes spread throughout the hills sit on multiple acres per plot, their highly involved neighborhood association makes for a welcoming and close-knit environment — when new residents move in, the neighborhood association is the first one to organize house-warming gift packages and parties.
Homes here are relatively new. Most were built in the 1970s as custom homes, with the exception being the few estates constructed in the 1920s as vacation homes for San Francisco’s elite. From Spanish mansions to chateau estates, their shared characteristic is in the broad windows that show off hill and bay views. Some of these historical architectural styles have been replaced in the last couple of decades by more modern luxury homes. The neighborhood is just a bit off the entrance to Highway 280, allowing for easy transportation while remaining removed from the rush of traffic.
